What Do These Exchange Words Mean?

Quick reference for the platform terms you'll run into.

You don't need to memorize all of this. Use it when something doesn't make sense.

Broker Basics
Broker
A platform that lets you buy and sell stocks. They route your orders to the actual exchanges.
Exchange
Where the actual trading happens. NYSE, NASDAQ, TSX, etc. You don't connect directly — your broker does.
Commission
What the broker charges per trade. Most are now $0 for stocks.
Spread
The gap between bid and ask. Brokers and market makers often profit from this even without commissions.
Margin
Borrowing money from the broker to trade. Wins are bigger. Losses are too.
Cash Account
Trade only with money you have. No borrowing. Safer.
Margin Account
Can borrow money to trade. Required for short selling and most options strategies.
Account Types (Canadian)
TFSA
"Tax-Free Savings Account." Gains are tax-free. Annual contribution limit.
RRSP
"Registered Retirement Savings Plan." Tax-deferred. Pay taxes when you withdraw in retirement.
Non-Reg
"Non-Registered." Regular taxable account. No contribution limits. Gains are taxed.
FHSA
"First Home Savings Account." Tax-free if used for a first home.
Capital Gains
Profit when you sell for more than you paid. Taxed at 50% inclusion in non-reg accounts.
Day Trading Status
CRA can rule frequent traders as "business income" — taxed at full rate, not capital gains rate.
Crypto / Perp / Prop
CEX
"Centralized Exchange." Company-run crypto exchange. Binance, Bybit, Coinbase.
DEX
"Decentralized Exchange." Trades happen on-chain. Uniswap, Hyperliquid.
Perp
"Perpetual Futures." Leveraged crypto contracts with no expiration. Highest volume in crypto trading.
Funding Rate
Fee paid between long and short holders on perps. Settled every 8 hours.
Prop Firm
A company that gives you their capital to trade after you pass an evaluation. You keep a profit split.
Drawdown Rule
The max loss a prop firm allows before they revoke your account. Trailing or daily.
